Thoroughbred
racing is a tremendously competitive sport for all involved. Horses compete with one another to win top prize money for their
owner, trainer, and jockey connection. Owning horses is also very competitive; some major thoroughbred owners spend millions
of dollars a year on horses, while others spend extremely less, while attempting to stay competitive with all other owners.
One of the most interesting factors of horse racing is the little guy can sometimes come through and beat the big ones. Horse
racing is all about having the right horse run well at the right time. Terra Racing Stable is in the mix of these owners attempting
to win the big prize each race they enter. Dom Romeo owns Terra Racing Stable, Dom has been involved with thoroughbred racing
for over thirty years. Terra Racing Stable owns fifty horses, although not all of them race. Twenty of the fifty spend their
days at Woodbine Racetrack where they train and run in races. Thirteen of the fifty are broodmares; they are bred almost every
year to a stallion, and then take care of the baby until the child becomes independent. Six of the fifty are yearlings; thoroughbreds
begin their racing careers when they turn two, therefore yearlings spend their time on farms while they go through a growth
period. Ten of the fifty are weanlings, these are babies and they also spend their days on the farms while their bodies develop.
The final of the fifty is a stallion; he has a stud fee that other owners pay for their broodmare to become impregnated by
the stallion. Terra Racing Stable uses the services of four trainers, Deborah England, John Ross, Nicholas Gonzolah, and Tony
Mattine. Deborah England has trained for Terra Racing Stable for many years; she currently trains seven thoroughbreds for
Terra Racing Stable. John Ross has trained for Terra Racing Stable for the past two years; John currently has four thoroughbreds
owned by Terra Racing Stable. Tony Mattine has trained and owned thoroughbreds with Terra Racing Stable for a few years; Tony
currently trains and owns part of six thoroughbreds with Terra Racing Stable. Nicholas Gonzalez trains the thoroughbreds which
Terra Racing Stable sends to Fort Erie Racetrack, in 2004 Nicholas trained three thoroughbreds for Terra Racing Stable before
Fort Erie closed on Labour Day. Terra Racing Stable has been successful over the years and hopes to continue its success into
the coming years. All Dom’s family and friends support Terra Racing Stable; the major supporters are sons Mark and Frank
who aid Dom in most decisions regarding the horses. Other supporters include grandsons Michael, Daniel, and Justin who are
always there to cheer the horses to the finish line each race.
